Donated goods for Charity shop sale
To raise money for the Woodside Animal Centre our charity shops in Birstall, Loughborough and Melton Mowbray depend on being able to sell unwanted goods which have been generously donated. Behind the scenes of each shop our dedicated volunteers and staff are lifting, sorting, steaming, cleaning, mending and pricing, a huge amount of time and effort is dedicated to ensure we have well presented items to sell. You may have heard some discussion on national and local radio and in the press recently about the huge costs for charity shops to sort, recycle and dispose of unsuitable donated items. As we do not want people to feel we are wasting time and money or for that matter are ungrateful, I would like to take the opportunity to clarify what we can and cannot sell, bearing in mind that we have to consider trading standards legislation, health and safety as well as whether or not people will buy what we have in our shops!
Cannot / Must not sell
- Anything that is damaged, worn out, unsafe or broken
- Electrical items (we have to pay for them to be safety tested and also pay for disposal)
- Children’s toys that do not have a CE mark
- Furniture – we just don’t have space
- Helmets (cycle, motorcycle and riding hats)
- Children’s car seats, pushchairs or prams
We can sell (This is not an exhaustive list!)
- Clothes in good condition
- Shoes in pairs and good condition
- Accessories, jewellery, hats, belts & bags in good condition
- Curtains, linens, fabric
- Books in good condition
- Bric-a-Brac and home ware
- CDs, videos, DVD’s (originals not copied)
- Children’s toys that have a CE mark
We are of course very grateful for all the incredible donations we receive for our charity shops; all we ask is that people consider whether the items they donate can be sold to raise money for us, or if they should be recycled or thrown away.
So please continue to help our animals by donating your unwanted items, you can take them to any of our shops or bring them to Woodside.
